Our language is constantly expanding. Writers have often attributed to the invention of new words, but in the modern era, we are finding that technology is a common cause of the shift we see in language. Examples of words invented through the use of technology include selfie, derp, tweet, fleek, photobomb, and hashtag. Words can shift in other ways, too. For example, the word “friend” used to only be used as a noun, until the introduction of social media. Now, it is common to use friend as a verb, as can be found in the sentence “Did you friend me?” Technology also repurposed many words, which is taking an original word and making a new term from it. Examples include cloud, troll, block, spam, viral, and profile. We can expect to have many new words and words with altered meanings as our language and culture expands alongside the expansion of technology.
